Compact Fluorescent light bulbs or CFL's is one of the best ways to save energy or money. Replacing CFL's with regular incandescent light bulb not only save energy but also is one of the best things one can do for the environment. When replace an incandescent bulb with a CFL, it reduces carbon monoxide emission to the environment by about 1000 pounds. Using less electricity means reducing greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Anything that reduce electricity consumption is good for the environment. CFLs are also safe to operate as it generates 70% less heat, and thus reduce energy costs associated with cooling homes and offices.

CFLs are available in various shapes and gives a soft white light, which does not flicker. Most popular CFLs are twisted or three-way CFLs. It offers a stimulating ambience. Another popular CFLs which are used in bathrooms are globe style CFLs.

The only drawback is that CFLs contain about 5 mg of mercury, which can cause serious health problems if inhaled or ingested in a period of time. Thus many environmentalists and other experts suggest recycling compact fluorescent bulbs to ensure that end up in landfills.
