Consumer Goods

Consumer goods generating from retail stores for personal use, family or household use. Consumer goods can also be categorized on the basis of durability. The products having long life called Durable goods ,such as furniture and garden tools. Nondurable goods are those that are quickly used up, or worn out and become outdated, such as food, school supplies and disposable things. Convenience things are also called suitable goods , those items that buyers always buy with the minimum amount of effort conveniently as possible. Most nondurable goods of low value that are frequently purchased in least quantities. These goods can be further divided into two subcategories: staple items and impulse items. They are grouped into three subcategories on the basis of consumer buying habits: convenience goods, shopping goods, and specialty goods.

Types of Consumer Goods

Consumer goods are those products which are purchased for personal consumption. Consumer goods are classified into following three areas:

  • Convenience Goods : Convenience products are inexpensive frequent purchases, there are little efforts needed to purchase them. For example fast food and confectionery products. Convenience products are split into staples like milk, eggs and emergency products which are purchased when the need arises e.g. Umbrellas.
  • Shopping goods :Shopping goods are usually high risk products. Consumers have to shopping around to find the best quality at reasonable price for that product. Examples are buying fridges, freezers or washing machines.
  • Specialty Goods :There are products that are purchased infrequently. The consumers will conduct vast researches to make sure that their purchase decision is right or wrong, because specialty goods are expensive and infrequent purchases.
